About Us

Our Mission

Geared Performance is not just a business, it is a standard. We strive to provide the highest quality of care and education through individualized treatment plans and training programs. We are dedicated to helping you improve your performance – whether it is for your sport, living a healthy pain-free lifestyle, or recovering from an injury by ensuring long-term results

Our Story

Geared Performance was founded on the principle of providing the highest standard of care for our clients. After hearing numerous stories about poor experiences with other healthcare practices, we recognized that the standard of care was not being upheld. Understanding that there is no “one size fits all” approach, we created a brand and business that embodies and demonstrates the quality of care our clients deserve. Everything we do is Geared to you! Ensuring our clients never feel alone in this process is our top priority, alongside delivering results. Too often, clients are abandoned and left with unanswered questions and no clear direction. We will never leave you stranded. If we cannot provide answers and results, we will guide you to those who can. You are not alone on this journey, and our team is here to ensure your success.

How We Do It

Through a comprehensive assessment, we will identify dysfunctions in movement patterns and soft tissue impairments. Then, by using a combination of Manual Therapy and individualized Exercise Selection, we will work with you to improve your overall function. By improving these dysfunctions, rehabilitating pre-existing and new injuries, and improving biomechanics, we give you all the tools and education needed for long-term success. The first appointment is always an in-depth assessment of your needs, so come dressed as you would a workout! We assess through a variety of functional movement patterns that are necessary for everyday activities.

About Liam

Liam is the founder and owner of Geared Performance. He is a Registered Massage Therapist whose practice is focused on optimizing biomechanics to improve overall performance. He graduated from the Massage Therapy Program at Algonquin College in 2016 and continues his education through various courses and certifications.

Liam has many years of experience working with a wide range of clients, including professional athletes, weekend warriors, 9-5ers, and beyond. He treats each individual with the same level of care and dedication, working with them to meet their specific goals.

Growing up an avid sports enthusiast, he played any sport he could sign up for. His passion, as he grew older, was rugby. He had a long career and made it to the selection camp for Team Canada. Unfortunately, his rugby career came to an end after suffering numerous concussions.

Liam’s drive to help people comes from his experiences in dealing with his own injuries and recovery. He has first-hand knowledge dealing with chronic injuries and pain that limit your ability to achieve your goals.

Some of the courses and certifications that Liam has taken since graduating are:

    • M1 Graston Technique Provider
    • Cupping Therapy Certification
    • MET and Pelvic Alignment Certification
    • Triphasic Training
    • Pre-Script L1 Course
    • Pre-Script L2 Course
    • Skill Acquisition Course

Clients Say the Nicest Things....

"Geared Performance is an integral part of my health journey. "Geared Performance revolutionized my fitness and training. After years away from rugby, I felt unprepared for university team tryouts. Liam Birkwood analyzed my performance, designed a personalized plan, and corrected my mistakes. His expertise and one-on-one sessions prepared me physically and mentally. Thanks to Geared Performance, I made the team and continue to benefit from Liam's advice and strategies."

Ben. B

"When I initially approached Liam to improve my shoulder mobility for snatches and cleans, he was the first professional to suggest an ultrasound for a more accurate assessment. Following the diagnosis, Liam guided me through a series of exercises that not only strengthened my shoulder muscles but also improved my mobility. His comprehensive action plan covered every aspect of my recovery, from healing to conditioning and building strength. Thanks to his expertise and guidance, my lifts have consistently improved. Liam has also been instrumental in helping me achieve various other fitness goals, including completing a triathlon, a half marathon, and soon, a full marathon. His dedication and support have been crucial in my journey toward better health and fitness."

Tyler. C

"I was originally referred to the Geared Performance team after years of chronic pain from an old injury. Their approach to creating my rehab plan was extremely detailed and rooted in a better understanding of my situation. Rather than be quick to conclude, Liam and his team take the time to listen and truly understand what you’re going through. Working with Geared Performance has allowed me to return to what I love most - being fit and physically active! "

Jake. S

"I have a large scar on my abdomen from a previous surgery. The scar was beginning to pucker and pull due to scar tissue adhesion. My therapist recommended Graston Therapy which has significantly improved the look and function of the scar. I would highly recommend Geared Performance for anyone looking to address bothersome scar issues."

Melissa H.

"Liam was extremely knowledgeable and able to address several of my issues right off the bat. I appreciated that he also suggested some stretches to help me work on improving mobility between sessions."

Karen. M

"Liam was without any doubt, the most knowledgeable and effective therapist I have seen (and that's saying something with my previous injuries). He took time to assess my range of motion and asymmetries. It was evident he knew his $*^| about biomechanics and was clearly in the right line of work. He was everything you would hope for in a trainer/ therapist when you're trying to train hard but feel limited with injuries. He was also very knowledgeable about the first responder lifestyle and considered the ergonomics of my work when explaining how to improve my training. He was also incredibly professional and had the sweetest clinic dog, Jia!"

Natalie. V

"Liam was excellent and very professional and personable. The best I have ever dealt with. I would and highly recommend Liam to anyone in need."
